Why Should the Legal Driving Age Be Raised
A constant question in the safety world was whether the age of driving should be raised. Typically, drivers must be 16 or 17 years old to drive alone. There are many people, including politicians and security experts, who want to raise the age to 18. Limiting forms of distracted driving is also a good idea. Some states have a tiered pilot program. Initially, no passenger is allowed unless they are an adult. After some experience, they can bring more passengers on board. Cell phone laws and zero-tolerance driving bans have also proven effective. Young drivers cause most accidents due to inexperience, not lack of maturity. No matter how old people start driving, they will have accidents because they have little experience.
This question only arises because young people are easy to blame. An adult who has just started driving statistically has as many accidents as a young person. Not ALL teens are dangerous, just a small percentage. Did you know that men are 77% more likely to kill someone while driving than women, does that mean we should only let women drive? It`s the same as you teenagers stereotype unfairly! Also, what would happen if 18-year-olds got their driver`s licence at 16, which completely refutes your point when you say that studies show that 16-year-olds have more car accidents than 18-year-olds! So wouldn`t the brain of a 21-year-old be more developed than that of an 18-year-old? And think about it, but most of the hoons on the street are 20 years old, not their teenage years. I think it needs to be addressed because more and more young people are distracted by their friends or their phones and have to focus on what`s ahead. For example, teenagers are addicted to their mobile phones. According to an AAFP survey, one in three American teenagers writes while driving. This behavior is usually associated with other behaviors such as drunk driving, speeding, not wearing a seat belt, and other forms of distracted driving. However, it is estimated that the actual number of teenagers texting and driving is much higher. Drive 18 better than 16. Even people drive without a driver`s license. The police do nothing.

The problem is already being addressed in some respects, which is great! However, I have an idea of an effective way to immediately keep teen drivers safe on the roads here in the Northeast. Drunk driving is very common among young people, although alcohol is illegal for those under 21.
In 2019, 24% of drivers aged 15 to 20 were killed in a car accident after consuming alcohol. Teenagers` lack of driving experience as well as alcohol and drug use increase the risk of accidents. Raising the age does not guarantee a reduction in deaths. On the contrary, it would simply change the statistics from “17 to 20 years” to “18 to 21 years”. The reason drivers crash is a lack of experience, and an 18-year-old with one year of experience is just as likely to crash as a 17-year-old with a year of experience. By the way, it would be the same with a 35-year-old man with a year of experience. Raising the age would therefore not significantly increase the number of deaths and injuries. You may be able to change your age, but you can`t change people! At the age of 16, a teenager can drive alone to save their parents time and money. Most 13-, 14- and 15-year-olds look forward to the day they can drive. On the same day, they can take their keys and exit through the front door and drive to their desired destination. On this day, they can get into the shiny new car and roll down the window to feel the cool wind on their faces as they drive on the empty road. The day when they can have the slightest control over their own lives and futures. In addition, the age of driving should not be raised. In 2017, it was reported that 17% of teens in grades 9 to 12 had seriously considered attempting suicide, and 2.4% of teens had attempted suicide and sought medical attention. This is the age at which most people start driving. When so many teens are having suicidal thoughts, it doesn`t make sense to give kids the responsibility to do something as dangerous as driving.
When teens graduate from high school, their mental health improves dramatically, making it much safer to drive a car autonomously. The numbers speak for themselves. Statistics have shown that 15% of all UK road deaths involve drivers under the age of 21. Research shows that 17- to 20-year-olds are about seven times more likely to be killed or injured in an accident (per mile). This is illustrated by the fact that in 2007, 135 young drivers were killed and many more injured on British roads. Raising the minimum driving age to 18 would significantly reduce the number of fatalities and injuries. During adolescence, the part of the brain that controls emotions develops faster than the part that controls impulses. This leads to more risk-taking behaviors in teens, such as speeding, swerving, and driving while they are distracted. By the age of 18, a teenager`s brain is significantly more developed, which helps reduce the number of road accidents.
Everyone is different. To say that someone is not mentally mature at the age of seventeen is a general generalization. Some people by the age of 18 may not have reached what the proposal calls “full mental maturity.” Some people may never reach “full spiritual maturity.” We get tired at different speeds, so we have safety precautions to make sure drivers have sufficient “mental maturity” and this is called the “driving test”. If you fail, you can`t drive legally without someone who has a clean driver`s license with you for three years. This is a violation of the law and will be punished.
